Context

Almada Festival is a Portuguese theatre festival, founded in 1984 by Joaquim Benite (1943–2012) and annually organized by the Almada Theatre Company and the Almada City Council, between July 4 and 18. The Almada Festival has established partnerships with several theatres in Lisbon, extending its programme to multiple venues on both banks of the Tagus River. In addition to the theatre programme itself, there are parallel programmes of music, street performances, debates, workshops, international seminars, exhibitions, and cycles of artistic and technical training.

Concept and Process

Almada Festival is one of Portugal's most renowned theatre festivals, founded in 1984 by Joaquim Benite and organized annually by the Almada Theatre Company and the Almada City Council. Every July, the festival brings together artists, companies, and audiences from around the world to celebrate contemporary theatre in all its forms.

For the 42nd edition, our studio was invited to create a new visual identity while preserving the festival's established logo, a key element designed by other creatives in previous years. Each edition takes visual inspiration from a selected work by a guest artist. In 2025, that piece was an engraving by Jorge Nesbitt, which became the foundation for the year's color palette and overall graphic atmosphere.

Given the variety of print and digital formats - from large-scale banners and posters to digital billboards, outdoor signage, and the program book - our goal was to design a flexible and eclectic system capable of adapting seamlessly across multiple contexts and audiences.

The resulting identity captures the spirit of the festival: dynamic, layered, and ever-evolving. It embraces the theatrical energy of Almada while honoring its artistic heritage, turning each application, from a poster to a stage-side sign, into a fragment of the same visual performance.
