Context

Notes on Cafona, d'après Fernando Marques Penteado, preceded by illustrations from the first and last rooms of the exhibition “Stubborn Drafts__Burning Fictions”, presented at Culturgest in Lisbon. The publication results from the artist’s solo exhibition at a Portuguese institution and invites the reader to journey through two of the exhibition’s seven rooms, imagining the possible fictions woven from the interplay of pieces, characters, and objects that inhabit them.

Concept and Process

For this project, our team designed a pocket-sized artist book inspired by vintage 1980s travel guides. The publication reinterprets the exhibition “Stubborn Drafts__Burning Fictions” through a compact yet immersive format that invites readers to experience the show from a new perspective.

The book unfolds as both a sequence and a panorama - it can be viewed page by page or fully unfolded as a continuous visual field. On the front, readers encounter the first room of the exhibition; on the reverse, the last room, followed by a bilingual curatorial text.

Through this structure, the publication captures the rhythm and spatial tension of the exhibition. Panoramic views are intentionally interrupted by close-ups of selected artworks, creating moments of emphasis and rhythm that echo the narrative complexity of Fernando Marques Penteado's practice.

Much like Penteado's work itself, Notes on Cafona oscillates between documentation and fiction, order and disruption - transforming the exhibition space into a printed landscape of materials, gestures, and layered meanings.
